Job Description

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Registered Nurse plays a crucial role in providing specialized care for the most vulnerable patients: newborns requiring intensive medical attention. These nurses work in a high-acuity environment, providing care to infants who are premature, critically ill, or have life-threatening conditions. The NICU nurse ensures the comfort and safety of these tiny patients by closely monitoring their clinical status, administering medication, and updating their medical records. They collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including neonatologists, respiratory therapists, and social workers, to deliver comprehensive and compassionate care. NICU Nurses also provide support and education to families, guiding them through the complexities of neonatal intensive care and helping them to understand the status and progress of their baby.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor vital signs and clinical status of newborns in the NICU.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by healthcare providers.
  • Maintain detailed records of patient care and clinical activities.
  • Coordinate with the healthcare team to develop individualized care plans.
  • Educate and support families about infant care and NICU procedures.
  • Operate and manage specialized medical equipment used in neonatal care.
  • Ensure a sterile and safe environment in compliance with healthcare regulations.
  • Facilitate communication between the medical team and families effectively.
  • Identify and respond promptly to signs of patient distress or complications.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of hospital policies and protocols.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and continuing education.
  • Support the emotional and psychological needs of families and caregivers.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a Registered Nurse, ideally in a NICU.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in neonatal intensive care practices.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with families and healthcare personnel.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and care excellence.
