The Impact Finance & Markets (IFM) division at The Nature Conservancy (TNC) provides technical and strategic leadership to create transformational impact with the private sector by translating the value of nature and conservation approaches into actionable, science-based strategies that can help solve societal challenges. Sitting in the Global Carbon Markets team, one of four teams in the IFM Division, the Equitable Carbon Markets Program Advisor ensures the carbon markets strategy achieves its ambitious social outcomes in addition to tangible climate impacts.

A program within the Global Carbon Markets team, The Nature Conservancy’s Natural Climate Solutions Accelerator (NCSA) provides technical and financial support to a diverse portfolio of high-quality carbon projects around the world. As a key member of the Global Carbon Market team, the Equitable Carbon Markets Advisor leads TNC’s work on ensuring carbon markets promote equitable outcomes for communities and landowners while achieving tangible climate impacts. The Advisor supports the leadership by managing critical partners, supporting fundraising efforts, and serving as the main technical resource on the social aspects of priority carbon projects. They serve as a key liaison and informational contact between the Global Carbon Markets team and other TNC teams, including the Indigenous Rights & Sovereignty team, the Human Rights team, and the Regional and Country teams, as well as external actors, including standards bodies, carbon project developers, and relevant NGOs. They track and/or assess carbon markets standards, governmental policies and decisions, and/or the practices or views of other stakeholders concerning social aspects of carbon projects. They advise TNC communications, marketing and philanthropy staff on the social impacts our carbon market projects and help ensure that TNC’s internal and external communications accurately reflect the strategy and conservation goals.

This position may be based in any country where TNC has an established entity and is within 6 hours of Eastern Time, taking into consideration legal restrictions, such as non-national ratios and immigration processing times.

Responsibilities & Scope

  • Lead the Equitable Carbon Markets Strategy, ensuring that the NCS Accelerator projects and our efforts to influence carbon markets achieve the Strategy’s objectives.
  • Lead efforts to ensure the NCSA projects achieve the highest-quality social outcomes by evaluating stakeholder engagement and social impacts across all project stages, and supporting the application of TNC’s carbon standards and safeguards.
  • Lead field teams design inclusive engagement, benefit-sharing, governance, and grievance mechanisms, while enhancing Indigenous and local leadership and improving tools for monitoring social outcomes.
  • Ensure all TNC’s carbon projects meet our Bar of Excellence through participation in TNC’s Carbon Project Review Committee (CPRC).
  • Lead efforts to expand Indigenous, local community, and smallholder leadership in carbon market projects by identifying opportunities, building partner capacity, sharing lessons, and cultivating strategic partnerships.
  • Shape carbon market rules, standards, and buyer preferences toward equity by sharing best practices and stories from Indigenous- and community-led projects, representing TNC in public forums, and engaging buyers, investors, and donors.
  • Supervise the Equitable Carbon Markets team by managing staff, overseeing the social aspects of the project portfolio, and securing resources to implement the strategy effectively.
  • Support fundraising efforts and as well as partnerships with financial institutions and/or investors and buyers to build understanding and buy-in on high-quality social standards.
  • Serve as liaison with Global Conservation Equity team and other internal TNC teams to ensure our carbon markets projects/efforts are aligned with the overall organization and integrating larger organizational tools/approaches/lessons.
  • Requires domestic and international travel up to 20% of time.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in conservation, social science, anthropology, public policy, international relations, international development, or related field and at least 5 years related experience, or equivalent combination.
  • At least 3 years of experience working with carbon projects and/or conservation or development projects that include smallholders, local communities, and/or Indigenous Peoples.
  • Experience facilitating participatory workshops and consultation processes with diverse sets of people.
  • Experience presenting to and/or communicating with investors or corporate entities, Indigenous Peoples or community leaders, donors, program leadership and/or similar audiences.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet time sensitive deadlines.
  • Fluency in English.

Desired Qualifications

  • Multi-lingual skills (e.g., Spanish, Portuguese, Swahili, French, or Bahasa Indonesian) and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Familiarity and knowledge related to carbon market standards (e.g., Climate Community and Biodiversity Standard, Plan Vivo, Verified Carbon Standard).
  • Ability to identify and implement practical solutions that uphold high integrity while adapting to complex social dynamics.
  • Ability to sensitively advise other staff on how to effectively engage with internal and external parties.
  • Ability to develop and drive new ideas and approaches.
  • Ability to work well in a highly matrixed, decentralized and collaborative organization. Possesses strong interpersonal skills and political savvy. Must be a team player.

Salary Information

This position may be based in any country where TNC has an established entity, within 6 hours of Eastern time, taking into consideration legal restrictions, such as non-national ratios and immigration processing times. For U.S. based applicants only, the starting pay range for this position is generally within the range of $100,000 – $122,000 for annual base salary and is based on location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. For all other applicants, pay ranges will be in local currency, the pay range will be based on the local labor market, and not tied to the above pay range. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment and used to determine your actual pay range. Additionally, for all applicants, actual pay will fall within a range based on a variety of factors including, for example, the candidate’s qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
