Job Description

As a phlebotomist, you will be a critical member of the healthcare team, responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients and ensuring their proper handling and processing. You will primarily work in hospitals, clinics, diagnostic laboratories, or blood donation centers. The role requires a high level of technical skill, attention to detail, and a compassionate approach when interacting with patients. Your ability to reassure and communicate effectively will help alleviate patient anxieties and ensure a smooth collection process. This role is vital in helping healthcare providers diagnose and treat various conditions, making accurate and efficient specimen collection indispensable.


Responsibilities

  • Collect blood specimens from patients using various phlebotomy techniques safely.
  • Label and store blood samples correctly to ensure accurate processing.
  • Review patient information and order forms for completeness before collection.
  • Prepare and maintain phlebotomy equipment and work areas in a sterile environment.
  • Reassure and provide clear instructions to patients during the collection process.
  • Coordinate with the medical team to ensure correct specimen handling and delivery.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety procedures during all phlebotomy activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of collections and relevant patient information.
  • Keep track of supply inventory and requisition supplies as needed for collections.
  • Participate in continuing education and training sessions related to phlebotomy.
  • Resolve issues related to patient problems with professionalism and care.
  • Assist in collection of other specimens as required, including urine tests and cultures.

Requirements

  • Certification in phlebotomy from an accredited institution is required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent education is a foundational requirement.
  • Previous experience in blood collection is highly desirable for this role.
  • Excellent manual dexterity with the ability to use phlebotomy equipment efficiently.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills are necessary to interact with patients.
  • Familiarity with medical software and laboratory information systems is a plus.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to maintain accurate and timely records consistently.
