Job Description

An FRP Laminator is specialized personnel responsible for applying fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) materials to surfaces to create strong, durable, and lightweight structures. This role is common in industries such as marine, construction, and automotive manufacturing where FRP is increasingly used due to its superior strength-to-weight ratio and resistance to environmental factors. The FRP Laminator works hands-on with materials and chemicals, following detailed engineering drawings and specifications to ensure precision and quality. The job requires a great deal of attention to detail and safety awareness, as handling chemicals and high-powered equipment is part of the daily operations. A successful FRP Laminator combines technical knowledge, manual dexterity, and a strong understanding of health and safety protocols to build composite structures that meet design specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and read engineering blueprints and drawings accurately to guide laminating processes.
  • Prepare molding surfaces by cleaning and inspecting for imperfections prior to lamination.
  • Mix resin compounds to the correct proportions to produce desired material characteristics.
  • Apply layers of fiberglass mats or fabrics to molds to form reinforced shapes.
  • Operate and maintain laminating machines and hand tools to ensure efficient operations.
  • Trim and adjust excess materials to fit molds and design specifications precisely.
  • Identify and address any defects or potential quality issues during the lamination process.
  • Adhere strictly to safety guidelines when handling chemicals and equipment.
  • Inspect and ensure the final product meets structural and aesthetic standards.
  • Clean and maintain work areas, tools, and equipment meticulously after each job completion.
  • Collaborate with team members to meet production targets and improve manufacturing processes.
  • Document production data and keep accurate records of materials used and issues encountered.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; technical training in composite materials is a plus.
  • Prior experience working with fiberglass or in a similar laminating position is required.
  • Strong knowledge of composite materials, particularly fiberglass-reinforced plastics.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics accurately.
  • Proficiency with hand tools and laminating equipment to execute tasks effectively.
  • Excellent understanding of safety practices when working with resins and chemicals.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality control to produce high-standard products.
