About This Role

Wells Fargo is seeking a Principal Engineer. This position is for Core Banking Modernization program which aims to setup new and modern enterprise-wide capabilities to support Core Banking.

In This Role, You Will

  • Act as an advisor to leadership to develop or influence applications, network, information security, database, operating systems, or web technologies for highly complex business and technical needs across multiple groups
  • Lead the strategy and resolution of highly complex and unique challenges requiring in-depth evaluation across multiple areas or the enterprise, delivering solutions that are long-term, large-scale and require vision, creativity, innovation, advanced analytical and inductive thinking
  • Translate advanced technology experience, an in-depth knowledge of the organizations tactical and strategic business objectives, the enterprise technological environment, the organization structure, and strategic technological opportunities and requirements into technical engineering solutions
  • Provide vision, direction and expertise to leadership on implementing innovative and significant business solutions
  • Maintain knowledge of industry best practices and new technologies and recommends innovations that enhance operations or provide a competitive advantage to the organization
  • Strategically engage with all levels of professionals and managers across the enterprise and serve as an expert advisor to leadership

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education

Desired Qualifications:

  • Technology oriented B.E/B Tech Degree or equivalent advanced degree
  • 7 years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in a principal or staff engineer role.
  • Proven experience in modernizing heritage systems into microservices and event-driven architectures.
  • Strong knowledge of distributed systems, APIs, messaging frameworks (Kafka, RabbitMQ), and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
  • Experience in database migration and transformation, from relational to NoSQL and/or polyglot persistence.
  • Hands-on knowledge of AI/ML tools, GenAI coding assistants (Copilot, Code Whisperer, etc.), and automation platforms.
  • Solid grounding in resilience engineering concepts and experience in SRE practices.
  • Experience working in highly regulated environments like financial services is a plus.
  • Has skills to conduct various performance tests for e.g., Load, spike, breakpoint, endurance etc to understand application/ service limits.

  • Modernization Strategy & Execution:
  • Lead complex technology initiatives including those that are companywide with broad impact
  • Architect and implement modernization initiatives including breaking monoliths into loosely coupled, event-driven microservices.
  • Guide domain decomposition aligned with business capabilities and platform scalability goals.
  • Lead transformation of heritage DBs to modern, fit-for-purpose data stores.
  • Platform Engineering & Enablement:
  • Define and implement reusable frameworks, developer tools, and golden paths to improve productivity and consistency.
  • Champion adoption of cloud-native architectures and CI/CD pipelines using DevSecOps principles.
  • Conduct code reviews to ensure high quality code and adherence to best engineering practices
  • Identify and apply GenAI and intelligent automation for faster discovery, documentation, design generation, code scaffolding, and test automation.
  • Partner with data science and platform teams to embed AI-powered engineering accelerators.
  • Design and enforce SLAs/SLOs/SLIs, implement self-healing capabilities, and champion chaos engineering practices.
  • Ensure platforms are fault-tolerant, recoverable, and observable at scale through distributed tracing, logging, and metrics.
  • Collaborate across business, product, and architecture teams to define technical direction and long-term platform vision.
  • Mentor engineers, fostering a strong engineering culture and continuous learning environment.
  • Act as a key participant in developing standards and companywide best practices for engineering complex and large scale technology solutions for technology engineering disciplines
  • Act as a technical advisor, solving complex engineering problems and making decisions on system architecture and design
  • Lead troubleshooting and resolution of production issues, especially those related to core banking modernization
