Senior Quality Test Engineer-I
Are you an experienced quality engineer with a ‘can do’ attitude and enthusiasm that inspires others?
And are you eager to work on delivering high quality products to our customers?
About Our Team
To help support our growing operational maturity, we are seeking a talented and self-motivated Senior Quality Engineer to work on our Core Engineering team.
About The Role
We’re seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Quality Engineer to join our Internal Developer Portal team, focusing on Backstage. In this role, you’ll lead efforts to ensure that our Backstage portal—and its ecosystem of plugins, APIs, and documentation—meet the highest standards of quality, reliability, and usability. You’ll collaborate with product managers, developers, business analyst, UX and other engineers to build, test, and release features that empower our engineering teams to be more productive and self-sufficient.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development, execution, and maintenance of comprehensive automated and manual test plans for Backstage and its plugins, ensuring robust coverage of core features and integrations.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, developers, and designers to define and refine acceptance criteria and quality standards for new Backstage features, plugins, and documentation.
- Establish and maintain processes for defining acceptance criteria and quality gates for contributed plugins and documentation, ensuring all contributions meet or exceed platform standards.
- Identify, document, and manage defects, working with development teams to prioritize and resolve issues efficiently and effectively.
- Drive continuous improvement of testing frameworks, tooling, and processes within the Backstage environment to enhance release confidence and reduce feedback cycles.
- Champion quality best practices, including test-driven development, shift-left testing, and effective CI/CD integration tailored to Backstage.
- Mentor and guide developers in quality best practices, fostering a culture of quality throughout the team and organization.
- Monitor key quality metrics (e.g., test coverage, defect trends, performance) and report on quality health to stakeholders.
- Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and feature planning, ensuring quality considerations are integrated from the earliest stages of development.
- Advocate for usability, accessibility, security, and maintainability standards across the Backstage platform.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience in software quality engineering or testing, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead capacity.
- Deep expertise with automated testing frameworks and tools (e.g., Cypress, Playwright, Jest, JMeter, Mocha).
- Experience in functional and non-functional testing of web applications and developer-facing portals, ideally with Backstage.
- Experience validating security and compliance for authentication and authorization flows.
- Proven track record of defining and enforcing acceptance criteria for contributed plugins, integrations, and documentation.
- Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins) and modern software delivery practices.
- Solid grasp of software development best practices, including version control, branching strategies, and agile methodologies.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, leadership-oriented mindset.
- Direct experience with Backstage plugin development, testing, and contributions.
- Experience with accessibility and usability testing for developer tools.
- Experience in cloud-native environments (Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, etc.).
- Familiarity with GraphQL and REST API testing.
