This role is part of Alcons Research & Development function, a team that innovates boldly and delivers new products and services to help revolutionize the eye care industry, advance optimal patient outcomes and help people see brilliantly.
Alcon is hiring a Principal Engineer to join our Surgical R&D organization. In this role, you will lead the end-to-end design and development of critical subsystem components, ensuring they meet both performance targets and regulatory requirements. You’ll mentor and guide our technical-support engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning. Partnering closely with manufacturing teams, you’ll drive projects from prototyping through production, establishing robust processes for seamless scale-up and quality control.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, model and document plastic, die-cast, sheet-metal, and machined parts and assemblies in Creo Parametric and SolidWorks.
- Lead project teams by mentoring associates and delegating work to meet R&D goals.
- Establish and sustain top-down skeleton architecture by integrating mechanical component designs, ensuring module interfaces and master models comply with Alcon’s development process.
- Produce detailed fabrication drawings with GD&T, perform tolerance analysis and to ensure manufacturability.
- Recommend optimal fabrication and additive-manufacturing methods (injection molding, die casting, sheet metal, machining) for R&D environmental needs
- Utilize Windchill for product-data management, revision control, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Develop and manage relationships with external suppliers and internal stakeholders.
- Conduct fit, form and DFM/A checks to validate designs against requirements.
- Enforce, maintain, and enhance Alcon’s engineering standards, processes, and procedures, leading continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Leverage experience in an engineering service environment to drive client-focused project delivery.
- Mentor and train engineers on Creo Parametric/SolidWorks, top-down design, and master-model best practices.
- Manage tabulated CAD files and associated drawings, handling their creation, updates, and revision control.
Preferred Qualifications/Skills/Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +13 yrs; Assoc.+9 yrs; M.S.+2 yrs; PhD+0 yrs)
- Motivated self-starter. Proven ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
- Working and collaborating with cross functional teams in a fast-paced R&D environment, preferably in medical device space.
- Proficient using 3D CAD software Creo Parametric modules: ISDX, Simulate, Pro-Process, Sheet Metal, Mechanism, Pro-Process, include employing top-down design and master model methodology.
- Proficient at Advance Modeling tools in SolidWorks.
- Proficient in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
- Familiar with DRM and ANSI Y14.5 drawing standards for completing drawings for machine, plastic, sheet metal, and die cast components, top-level assemblies, and module assemblies.
- Design and produce drawings for System Interconnect, Cables and PCB FF is a plus.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of materials and specifications for: plastic, die casting, sheet metal, and machine parts.
- The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English
