Job Description

A Phlebotomist is a vital member of the healthcare team responsible for the collection and processing of blood samples. They play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of medical tests and diagnostic processes. This position requires precision, attention to detail, and a high level of professionalism as it involves working with patients directly and handling their biological samples. Phlebotomists must have excellent communication skills to interact effectively with patients of all ages and backgrounds, including those who may be anxious about blood draws. They must adhere to strict health and safety protocols to ensure the safety of both patients and healthcare staff.


Responsibilities

  • Draw blood from patients and donors using needles and other related equipment.
  • Ensure the proper labeling and handling of collected blood samples at all times.
  • Verify patient and sample details for accuracy before submitting for testing.
  • Calmly and efficiently deal with nervous or anxious patients during procedures.
  • Maintain a sterile and organized work environment according to health standards.
  • Document all blood draw activities and patient interactions accurately in the system.
  • Use specialized phlebotomy equipment to optimize accuracy and minimize discomfort.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols to protect patients, staff, and oneself from hazards.
  • Coordinate effectively with other medical professionals to support patient care.
  • Conduct basic tests such as checking haemoglobin levels, when required.
  • Manage inventory of phlebotomy supplies and request orders as needed.
  • Update skills through continued education and ensure certifications are current.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional certification in phlebotomy preferred.
  • Previous experience in phlebotomy or related medical field is highly desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for interacting with patients and healthcare staff.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially regarding sample labeling and documentation.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Current CPR certification and up-to-date understanding of medical protocols.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols to prevent contamination and ensure patient safety.
