Job Description:

The Directed Energy Research Center of the Technology and Innovation Institute is looking for a Senior FPGA Engineer to work as part of the Signals, Electronics, and Acoustics team. The job includes traveling overseas, on occasion for short periods, to participate in conferences, visits of suppliers or partners, training, etc.

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of a Lead Researcher and in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary engineering team, the Senior FPGA engineer designs, develops, integrates, and tests complex FPGA systems to be used in scientific experimental setups or prototypes.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Solving real-world problems by architecting and leading the implementation of FPGA designs
  • Define system requirements based on project needs.
  • Prepare the definition of project requirements.
  • Design tests to ensure the FPGA designs operate as intended.
  • Develop and deploy methods to ensure an appropriate target level of quality and performance.
  • Design, implement, test, and maintain reusable IP cores and prototype FPGA systems using SystemVerilog and Verilog
  • Optimize FPGA designs for PPA (Power, Performance, and Area).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, hardware engineers, and project managers.
  • Write reports and documentation, including specifications, project budgeting and planning, milestone planning, design documents, and test plans.
  • Keep up to date with the latest digital design methodologies and explore new techniques to enhance FPGA designs.
  • Perform risk assessments.
  • Presenting designs to managers and end-users
  • Other duties related to the position.

Skills required for the job:

  • Deep understanding of digital electronics concepts including clock domains, asynchronous and synchronous digital circuit design, timing analysis and closure, testbench design, debugging digital circuits, embedded system design, microcontrollers
  • Familiarity with high-speed digital design principles and techniques
  • Understanding of signal integrity, power integrity, and EMI/EMC
  • Demonstrated proficiency in implementing high-performance PC to FPGA interfaces (10Gb Ethernet preferred, but PCIe and USB also relevant)
  • Proficient in open-source FPGA toolchains, including LiteX or Amaranth, yosys, and nextpnr.
  • Fluency in Verilog and SystemVerilog.
  • Experience with scripting languages for automation (Python, TCL)
  • Ability to program in embedded programming languages, like C.
  • Proficiency in reading hardware schematics and cross-probe with PCB design tool (Altium)
  • Familiar with basic electronics lab equipment, e.g. multimeter, oscilloscope, logic analyser, etc.
  • Knowledge of digital signal processing techniques
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and collaborative development environments.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and independently.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Technical writing skills

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or other engineering field.
  • 7 years of relevant industry or academic experience.
  • Ability to prepare project definition and planning, matching business needs with technologies.
  • Ability to execute program plans in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative team environment.
  • Methodical problem-solving and root cause analysis skills.
  • Good level of English (speaking and writing).
