Job Description

The Quantity Estimator plays a crucial role in the construction and engineering industry, as they are responsible for calculating the amount of materials and labor required for a project. They work closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients to prepare accurate cost estimates that ensure projects stay within budget and meet client expectations. Attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and comprehensive knowledge of construction materials and practices are essential for this role. The Quantity Estimator also evaluates risks, maintains accurate records, and contributes to the successful completion of projects by providing critical financial insights. Their work helps prevent cost overruns, ensuring that the project aligns with financial feasibility while maintaining high standards.


Responsibilities

  • Accurately calculate the amount of materials needed for construction projects.
  • Analyze project plans and specifications to develop comprehensive cost estimates.
  • Consult with engineers and architects to ensure estimates are accurate and feasible.
  • Prepare detailed and itemized cost estimates for bids and proposals.
  • Monitor and analyze cost trends to provide insights and recommendations.
  • Review project changes and assess their impacts on costs and timelines.
  • Collaborate with project managers to align estimates with project goals and budgets.
  • Conduct site visits to understand project scope and challenges more accurately.
  • Update and maintain cost databases for various materials and labor rates.
  • Negotiate with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain best pricing options.
  • Generate reports to communicate cost estimates, updates, and potential risks.
  • Participate in post-project evaluations to refine future estimating processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least three years of experience in construction estimating or quantity surveying.
  • Strong proficiency in using estimating software and MS Excel for calculations.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction methods and material costs in the industry.
  • Excellent analytical and mathematical skills to produce precise estimates.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively convey estimate details to stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with local building codes, regulations, and safety standards.
  • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail are critical for success.
  • Certification such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) is a plus.
