Job Description:

The Directed Energy Research Center of the Technology and Innovation Institute is looking for a Product Manager of User Experience (UX) to work as part of the Signals, Electronics, and Acoustics team. The job includes traveling overseas, on occasion for short periods, participating in conferences, visits of suppliers or partners, training, etc.

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of a Lead Researcher and in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary engineering team, the Senior Product Manager User Experience drives user experience strategy and execution for our web-based map-centric data analytics platform, translating complex geospatial data capabilities into intuitive, user-centered frontend experiences while managing the product roadmap using Kanban methodology and modern cloud-based development practices.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Define and execute product strategy for the web frontend of our map-centric data analytics software, translating user needs and business objectives into clear product requirements
  • Own the end-to-end user experience across web interfaces, ensuring intuitive workflows for complex geospatial data analysis and visualization
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to prioritize features and improvements using Kanban methodology
  • Conduct user research, analyze usage patterns, and gather feedback to identify pain points and opportunities for UX enhancement
  • Develop and maintain product roadmaps, feature specifications, and acceptance criteria using behavior-driven development (BDD) practices including Gherkin syntax
  • Work closely with backend teams to ensure seamless integration between REST APIs, AWS services, and low-latency user-facing web interfaces
  • Establish key product metrics to ensure user success and to inform iterative improvements
  • Facilitate cross-functional communication and decision-making processes to maintain product development velocity
  • Manage stakeholder expectations and communicate product vision, progress, and trade-offs to leadership and customers
  • Other duties related to the position

Skills required for the job:

  • Strong product management experience with web-based software platforms, preferably in data analytics or visualization
  • Deep understanding of user experience principles and ability to translate complex technical capabilities into intuitive user workflow.
  • Experience with behavior-driven development (BDD) practices and writing
  • requirements in Gherkin format
  • Technical fluency with WebSocket and REST API design principles, modern web UI (e.g. React, Nuxt+Vue, Svelte, Astro), TypeScript, caching (e.g. Redis, Valkey), and AWS cloud services including S3, API Gateway, and related technologies
  • Experience with Kanban or other agile methodologies for managing incremental product development cycles
  • Proficiency in user research techniques, usability testing, personas, and data-driver decision making
  • Technical fluency sufficient to collaborate effectively with engineering teams on frontend and backend integration challenges
  • Strong analytical skills for interpreting user behavior data, product metrics, and market feedback
  • Experience with mapping technologies, GIS systems, or geospatial data analysis
  • Ability to balance user needs, technical constraints, and business priorities in product decisions
  • Experience with business-native requirements like BDD (gherkin, cucumber) a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to communicate with diverse audience

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Engineering, Design, or related technical field
  • 4 years of relevant product management experience
  • Demonstrated experience creating user personas and conducting UX research to inform product decisions
  • Hands-on experience writing BDD scenarios and collaborating with engineering teams on acceptance testing
  • Familiarity with modern low-latency web UI, WebSockets, REST API integration, and AWS cloud services (S3, API Gateway, Lambda, CloudFront)
  • Understanding of cloud architecture patterns and data flow between frontend applications and AWS backend services
  • Demonstrated track record of shipping successful web applications or data visualization tools
  • Portfolio demonstrating successful product launches and measurable improvements to user experience
  • Previous exposure to data analytics, business intelligence, or mapping/GIS software preferred
  • MBA or advanced degree in relevant field is a plus, but not required
