Job Description

A Food Safety Officer plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and quality of food products within an organization or regulatory body. They are responsible for implementing and monitoring food safety regulations to protect public health. In this role, a Food Safety Officer must be knowledgeable about food safety legislation, standards, and practices. They conduct inspections, audits, and assessments to evaluate compliance with established guidelines and identify potential food safety risks. Additionally, they work collaboratively with food producers, processors, and distributors to promote best practices in food handling and storage. A Food Safety Officer also provides training and guidance to staff and stakeholders on food safety procedures, ensuring the implementation of corrective actions when necessary. By maintaining open communication with relevant agencies and staying updated on industry trends, they help to develop and refine food safety policies. 


Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular inspections of food production and distribution facilities to ensure compliance.
  • Identify potential food safety hazards and recommend corrective actions effectively.
  • Develop and implement food safety policies and procedures in the organization.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with food safety regulations and standards.
  • Provide training sessions to staff on food handling and hygiene practices.
  • Investigate foodborne illness complaints promptly and thoroughly.
  • Prepare detailed reports of inspection findings and corrective actions taken.
  • Collaborate with local health authorities on food safety issues as needed.
  • Stay updated on the latest food safety legislation and industry best practices.
  • Review and approve food labeling to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Conduct risk assessments and create mitigation strategies for food safety.
  • Facilitate communication with food manufacturers and distributors on safety protocols.


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or related discipline.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a food safety role.
  • Strong understanding of food safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Experience conducting inspections and audits in food facilities.
  • Certifications in HACCP, SQF, or other food safety management systems.
  • Excellent communication and training skills for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to analyze food safety data and recommend effective solutions.
