Job Description

An Ultrasound Technician, also known as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, plays a critical role in the healthcare industry by using ultrasound equipment to produce images of the internal organs and tissues of the body. These images are used by physicians to diagnose and monitor various medical conditions. Ultrasound Technicians are trained to perform procedures in a variety of specialties, including obstetrics, gynecology, abdominal, cardiac, and vascular sonography. Their work requires a strong understanding of human anatomy as well as technical proficiency with the ultrasound equipment. Individuals in this role must be detail-oriented, with excellent communication skills to effectively interact with patients and healthcare team members. The role also demands strong analytical skills to evaluate ultrasound images and provide accurate preliminary findings to physicians.


Responsibilities

  • Operate ultrasound equipment to capture images for diagnostic purposes.
  • Ensure patient safety and comfort during ultrasound examinations.
  • Maintain a thorough patient record including observations and findings.
  • Coordinate with physicians to determine necessary exam types and protocols.
  • Evaluate ultrasound images for quality and accuracy before releasing them for interpretation.
  • Prepare and maintain diagnostic imaging equipment for each examination.
  • Explain procedures to patients and address any questions or concerns they might have.
  • Adhere to established protocols and standards set by medical or regulatory bodies.
  • Manage inventory of necessary supplies and report any shortages or maintenance issues.
  • Keep updated with latest practices and technologies in the field of ultrasonography.
  • Participate in continuing education and training sessions to enhance professional skills.
  • Collaborate with medical team members to integrate findings into comprehensive patient care.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography or a related field is required.
  • Certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) is preferred.
  • At least two years of experience in a clinical ultrasound setting is advantageous.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with patients and staff.
  • Proficient in using ultrasound equipment and understanding technical specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to work accurately in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards.
