Job Description

A Dental Assistant plays a crucial role in ensuring that dental practices run smoothly while providing excellent care to patients. They assist dentists during dental procedures, prepare patients for treatment, and ensure that the necessary tools and materials are available when needed. Dental Assistants also take on administrative tasks, including scheduling appointments and maintaining patient records. Their role is vital not only in clinical support but also in providing a comfortable and welcoming environment for patients. With a combination of clinical and interpersonal skills, Dental Assistants operate at the heart of the dental team, building rapport with patients and contributing to an efficient and pleasant patient experience. As the field of dentistry evolves, Dental Assistants may also need to stay updated with the latest advancements in dental care and technologies.


Responsibilities

  • Assist the dentist during various dental procedures and surgeries.
  • Prepare dental instruments and ensure they are sterilized and ready for use.
  • Escort patients to treatment rooms and make them comfortable before procedures.
  • Take and develop dental radiographs (x-rays) as instructed by the dentist.
  • Ensure patient records are updated with the latest treatment notes and information.
  • Manage inventory and order dental supplies as necessary for practice needs.
  • Provide effective patient communications, including aftercare instructions and appointment scheduling.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the dental practice, including equipment and operatory areas.
  • Assist in managing emergency situations by providing preliminary support and preparing cases.
  • Educate patients on oral hygiene strategies and advice on dental care products.
  • Support administrative duties by answering phone calls and handling patient inquiries.
  • Input and manage patient data in the dental practice management software systems.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited dental assisting program or equivalent training.
  • Certification in Dental Radiography is preferred or may be required by state law.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently and effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact clearly with patients and dental professionals.
  • Ability to stay calm and provide support during dental emergencies and stressful situations.
  • Basic computer skills with knowledge of dental practice management software desirable.
  • Current CPR certification or a commitment to obtaining it within a specified time frame.
