Job Description

A Quantity Surveyor plays a crucial role in the construction and building industry by managing all costs relating to building and civil engineering projects. They seek to minimize the costs of a project and enhance value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality. This role involves working closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients from the inception to the completion of a project. Quantity Surveyors are tasked with the preparation of cost estimates, budgets, and managing contracts, as well as monitoring project costs and valuing completed work to handle payments. With a keen eye for detail and strong analytical skills, they help to ensure that construction projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.


Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze project costings for tenders, based on the architect's drawings.
  • Work alongside the project team to ensure compliance with the commercial aspects of contracts.
  • Monitor and control the project through regular cost forecasting and analysis.
  • Negotiate contract terms with contractors and ensure all agreements are well-documented.
  • Assess the value of completed tasks, arrange payments, and release invoices.
  • Provide advice on contractual claims to minimize risks of financial disputes.
  • Manage procurement activities and develop strategies to meet project budgets.
  • Perform risk, value management, and cost control measures for projects.
  • Maintain awareness of the different building contracts currently in use.
  • Liaise with clients, internal teams, external contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Evaluate contractor and subcontractor work progress for accuracy of billing.
  • Collaborate with engineers and architects to discuss and evaluate project specifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience working as a Quantity Surveyor in the construction industry.
  • Strong analytical, numerical skills, and high attention to detail are essential.
  • Excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills to manage client and contractor relationships.
  • Ability to interpret architectural drawings and assess project costs accurately.
  • Proficient in the use of industry-related software and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Deep understanding of construction contracts, financial management, and procurement.
