The Postdoctoral Health Analytics Scientist will work as part of the Global Science Team for The Nature Conservancy (TNC). They provide technical and scientific support for The Nature Conservancy’s One Conservancy Science Plan, which is investing in science across the organization to achieve TNC’s 2030 Goals for people and nature. This position will be focused on health sciences, helping to advance the work of the organization’s Planetary and Human Health Initiative.

This position will report to the Planetary Health Scientist and will sit on the Human Dimensions Science team (one of the 6 Science lines in the Global Science team). The Postdoctoral Fellow will analyze health impacts of nature-based solutions, informing the development of new methodologies and supporting study design and analytics work under a range of projects (e.g. on health dimensions of urban greening, restoration, regenerative agriculture, natural climate solutions, and watershed conservation).

This is a two-year term limited position with the possibility of a one- or two-year extension based on performance, deliverables, and funding opportunities. We’re Looking For You

The Postdoctoral Health Analytics Scientist reviews and synthesizes scientific literature to guide understanding that can inform conservation action related to TNC’s 2030 Goals including people, global climate change and biodiversity, with a focus on connections to health. They analyze data, develop research methodologies, design and conduct studies, write reports and peer reviewed articles and develop proposals to support conservation efforts that are health-positive. The Postdoctoral Health Analytics Scientist designs empirical strategies, identifies data protocols to test hypotheses, evaluates outcomes, and contributes to the development of new theories of change related to the testing, validating, and scaling of nature-based solutions and ecosystem services for health. They may provide quantitative research support to other Human Dimensions Science projects, administer and coordinate conservation activities, and undertake project management in order to inform programs within the Global Science business unit and scientific research. They also contribute to grant writing and other fundraising activities.

Responsibilities & Scope

  • Review, draw methodological insights from and synthesize relevant scientific literature.
  • Manage and analyze data and write up findings for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Design experiments and collect data.
  • Develop visualizations for communicating research results.
  • Deliver tools, data, analytical support, field services and training to staff and partners.
  • Contribute to grant writing and other fundraising efforts.
  • Work collaboratively though influence and building professional relationships.
  • Undertake internal partnerships and collaborations to support above functions and responsibilities.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

What You’ll Bring

  • Ph.D. in a health-related or natural or social science discipline with mixed methods skills, awarded by start of the position (and no longer than 4 years prior) and at least 1 to 2 years of related experience.
  • Experience and interest in interdisciplinary research on topics including health-related ecosystem services, health geography, and/or epidemiological analyses related to climate/biodiversity and health connections.
  • Experience reviewing and synthesizing relevant scientific literature.
  • Experience collecting, manipulating, analyzing and interpreting scientific data.
  • Experience preparing reports of findings for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience with grant writing or other fundraising efforts.
  • Strong writing and communication skills in English.
  • Record of peer reviewed publications.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience sourcing and analyzing health and exposure information (e.g., via clinical records, population-based household surveys, surveillance studies) using secondary or primary data.
  • Experience integrating and analyzing health, ecological, and spatial data.
  • Experience managing, analyzing, and visualizing spatial data with Google Earth Engine, ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar programs, using languages such as Python or R.
  • Experience with qualitative comparative analysis.
  • Experience with sampling strategies and developing data collection instruments.
  • Experience working with and integrating health and environment data.
  • Familiarity with demographic and socio-economic data sets.
  • Experience that demonstrates attention to detail.
  • Experience working collaboratively across multiple interests and disciplines, including non-scientists.
  • Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of staff and partners.
  • Academic, in-service, or lived experience with traditional health knowledge, One Health, Planetary Health or related holistic approaches would be an asset.

Salary Information

This position may be based in any country where TNC has an established entity, taking into consideration legal restrictions, such as non-national ratios and immigration processing times. For U.S. based applicants only, the starting pay range for this position is generally within the range of $58,820 and $88,145 for annual base salary and is based on location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. For all other applicants, pay ranges will be in local currency, the pay range will be based on the local labor market, and not tied to the above pay range. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment and used to determine your actual pay range. Additionally, for all applicants, actual pay will fall within a range based on a variety of factors including, for example, the candidate’s qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
