Job Description

The Operating Theatre Nurse, also known as a perioperative nurse, plays a critical role within the surgical team to ensure that patients undergo surgeries in a safe and efficient manner. This specialized nurse is responsible for providing high-quality care and support to patients throughout their entire surgical experience, from pre-operative preparation through to post-operative recovery. Operating Theatre Nurses work closely with surgeons, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals, and they are often the patient's advocate in the operating room. Attention to detail, quick critical thinking, and a compassionate approach are essential skills in this role. This position requires a work environment that is fast-paced and can be high pressure, necessitating a calm and proactive attitude. As surgical technology evolves, Operating Theatre Nurses must stay informed about the latest advancements in surgical techniques and equipment.


Responsibilities

  • Prepare the operating room for surgery by ensuring it is sterile and ready.
  • Ensure all necessary surgical instruments and supplies are available and functioning correctly.
  • Assist the surgical team during operations by passing instruments and other supplies.
  • Monitor patients' vital signs and conditions throughout the surgery and recovery period.
  • Provide immediate care and reaction to emergency situations during surgeries.
  • Educate patients about what to expect before, during, and after the surgery.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and recording of patient information and surgical procedures.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop and implement patient care plans.
  • Maintain a clean and organized environment in the operating room at all times.
  • Support and train junior nursing staff and surgical team members.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
  • Assess equipment and supplies needs and coordinate their procurement.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with current nursing license and qualifications.
  • Proven experience working in an operating theatre or surgical environment.
  • Strong understanding of surgical procedures and aseptic techniques.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills in high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary surgical team.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of surgical instruments and operating room technologies.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Capacity to stand for long periods and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Commitment to patient care and safety throughout all phases of surgery.
