Job Description

An Anaesthesia Technician plays a critical role in the operating room and other medical environments where anaesthesia is administered. These professionals are responsible for preparing and maintaining anaesthesia equipment, supporting anesthesiologists during procedures, and ensuring patient safety at all times. Anaesthesia Technicians must have a comprehensive understanding of various anaesthetic agents and equipment, coupled with a keen attention to detail and strong communication skills. They collaborate closely with surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists to contribute to successful surgical outcomes. This role requires both technical expertise and the ability to stay calm under pressure, as they often work in high-stakes environments. As healthcare demands continue to grow, proficient Anaesthesia Technicians are vital in delivering patient care and upholding healthcare standards.


Responsibilities

  • Prepare and calibrate anaesthesia equipment before surgical procedures begin.
  • Assist anesthesiologists with the preparation and administration of anaesthetic agents.
  • Monitor patients’ vital signs during surgeries and report any irregularities.
  • Maintain sterile conditions to ensure a safe operating environment for all parties.
  • Manage inventory of anaesthetic supplies and ensure restocking as necessary.
  • Support with patient positioning and transport to and from the operating room.
  • Troubleshoot any equipment malfunctions and perform minor maintenance or repairs.
  • Document patient information and anaesthesia details comprehensively and accurately.
  • Participate in quality improvement and safety protocols within the department.
  • Assist in emergency situations by responding swiftly and efficiently to requests.
  • Clean and sterilize anaesthesia equipment following procedures to prevent infections.
  • Educate patients and their families about the anaesthesia process and post-operative care.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Anaesthesia Technology program or equivalent qualification.
  • Certification as an Anaesthesia Technician (Cer.A.T.) is highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in an acute care or hospital setting is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and anaesthetic agents required.
  • Proficiency in the use of anaesthesia-related medical equipment and technology.
  • Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with medical staff and patients.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Attention to detail and ability to remain focused in a fast-paced environment.
