The INTERFACES Department at the Laboratory ICB UMR 6303 CNRS, Université Bourgogne Europe, Dijon, France, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the field of cryo-spectroscopic and cryo-electrochemical studies for electrochemical energy systems, beginning September–October 2025. This research is supported by the BFC regional project – Structuration de la recherche 2025.

Project Overview

The successful candidate will advance the understanding of electrode/aqueous electrolyte interfaces, which are central to technologies such as water electrolyzers and aqueous batteries. The research will focus on the detection and characterization of transient species at model electrodes using integrated electrochemical, spectroscopic, and cryo-XPS techniques. A novel cryogenic approach will be employed to trap short-lived intermediates, enabling in situ and operando analysis. The project involves access to state-of-the-art facilities at ICB and collaboration with national and international partners, including the Autonomous University of Barcelona and SOLEIL synchrotron.

Requirements

– Engineering or Master’s degree (Master 2) in materials science or physical chemistry of materials

– Practical experience in XPS or electrochemistry is advantageous, but training will be provided
