Job Description

A Legal Counsel is pivotal to ensuring that a company operates within the confines of the law, offering counsel on a range of legal issues and providing strategic advice on legal matters. This role is integral to safeguarding the company’s reputation, fostering compliance, and mitigating risks. A Legal Counsel works closely with management and other departments, providing both consultancy and direct representation when necessary. This position requires a strong understanding of various fields of law, including corporate, labor, intellectual property, and litigation. Throughout their role, a Legal Counsel must balance legal obligations with business objectives, supporting the company's growth while ensuring it remains legally sound. An effective Legal Counsel is proactive, analytical, and possesses excellent negotiation and communication skills.


Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice and guidance to senior management and department heads.
  • Interpret and translate legal issues to provide relevant, timely, and succinct advice.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and related legal documents.
  • Ensure company policies are in line with current laws and regulations.
  • Conduct thorough legal research to support company initiatives and decisions.
  • Handle any corporate regulatory issues and liaise with regulatory bodies as needed.
  • Manage and mitigate legal risks by designing robust legal risk management strategies.
  • Supervise external counsel and manage litigation and dispute resolution processes.
  • Oversee the maintenance of legal records and documents, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Develop legal strategies to improve the company's legal positioning in the market.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and ethical standards in business operations.
  • Stay updated on legal developments, industry trends, and changes in legislation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB) from a recognized university or institution.
  • At least five years of experience working in a corporate legal environment.
  • Strong understanding of corporate law, labor law, and intellectual property rights.
  • Proven ability to draft and negotiate complex contracts and legal documents.
  • Excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving skills within a legal framework.
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder management.
  • Demonstrated capability to manage multiple caseloads and meet tight deadlines effectively.
