Title: Principal Research Analyst – Refining and Petrochemicals Integration

Location: India – Gurugram (preferred) or Mumbai

Band: D – Principal Research Analyst

Role Purpose

The focus of this role will be to closely monitor and assess key events and commercial developments in refineries and petrochemicals markets across international markets, analysing industry short- and long-term data. You will use this to produce high-quality research in the form of thought-provoking articles, presentations and reports. You will develop a unique perspective and understanding of the refining and petrochemicals industry. An important part of the role will also be to capture emerging trends in the market like biofuels co-processing, petrochemicals integration, technological developments and assessing the impact of carbon pricing on refinery and integrated refinery-petrochemical site profitability. The scope will include short- and long-term industry analysis and will contribute to regional and global research content for Refinery Evaluation Model (REM), REM-Chems, PetroPlan, Product Markets Services, the Petrochemical Feedstocks Service and the Refining & Petrochemical Model.

The candidate should have a solid understanding of refining and petrochemical market fundamentals, and be keen to develop industry and client relationships, focus on supporting the commercialization of our oils and chemicals service, learn about the intricacies of the regional markets and its impact on international markets, and understand how it interacts with other commodity markets. A client-centric and commercial approach will be essential to deliver success in the role.

Main Responsibilities

  • Gather and organise regional data (related to crude, refined products markets, biofuels, petrochemical products, and refining and chemicals assets) from different sources in a timely manner, consolidate the information into our various models, and articulate key market implications for regional supply of products and trade.
  • Contribute in the development of modelling tools to develop strategies around the refining and petrochemicals markets analysis.
  • Regularly produce original analysis, publications and presentations that influence clients’ business perspectives and support the analytics team on ad-hoc analysis of events impacting refined products and chemicals markets
  • Interact regularly with clients, advising at a senior level within a region or sector, to enhance WoodMac’s reputation as a trusted authority.
  • Regularly provide innovative ideas, scenarios and solutions to support improvements in internal processes or quality of research/service to clients.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in the refining and petrochemicals industry, with some in refinery and/or petrochemicals operations and solid understanding of economic drivers. Additional experience with refinery modelling/linear programming (LP) planning and optimisation software will be considered a plus. Candidates with less than the required years of relevant experience may be considered with an adjusted banding.
  • Exposure to and knowledge of international markets are desirable.
  • Prior experience in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in related field such as engineering or economics.
  • Experience in developing/maintaining models built in Excel.
