Job Description

An Optical Technician plays a vital role in the field of vision care by ensuring that patients receive the highest quality eyeglasses and contact lenses suited to their needs. These professionals carry out a range of tasks including the preparation, fitting, and dispensing of optical products. Working closely with optometrists and ophthalmologists, Optical Technicians use their technical expertise to assist in the consultation and examination process for eyewear. They are responsible for the maintenance and repair of optical devices and utilize sophisticated equipment to manufacture lenses. As part of a dedicated team in optical laboratories or retail environments, their work significantly impacts the effectiveness of visual aids, enhancing customer satisfaction and promoting ocular health.


Responsibilities

  • Assist optometrists and ophthalmologists in the selection and fitting of eyewear.
  • Fabricate lenses according to prescription specifications using precision equipment.
  • Perform measurements of patients’ eyes and other optical parameters accurately.
  • Maintain records of customer measurements and optical device prescriptions meticulously.
  • Provide guidance to customers on eyewear care and usage instructions accurately.
  • Advise patients on lens types, frames, and treatment options available.
  • Ensure optical equipment is calibrated and maintained according to industry standards.
  • Edit and customize lens designs using specialized optical software applications.
  • Conduct quality checks on completed products to ensure accuracy and quality standards.
  • Manage inventory of eyewear and parts efficiently, ensuring adequate stock levels.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and repairing faulty or damaged eyewear promptly.
  • Stay informed about the latest trends and advancements in optical technologies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is necessary for an Optical Technician role.
  • Certification from an accredited optical technology program is highly recommended.
  • Proven experience as an Optical Technician or similar role within the industry.
  • Strong understanding of ophthalmic lenses, including materials and designs.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for precise tasks.
  • Customer service skills to effectively assist and communicate with clients.
  • Familiarity with operating and maintaining specialized optical equipment effectively.
