Job Description

Marine diesel engine technicians play an essential role in the marine industry, utilizing their expertise to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair diesel engines on various marine vessels. These professionals are pivotal in ensuring that marine engines operate at optimal performance and adhere to safety standards. They work in diverse environments, including commercial ships, luxury yachts, and fishing boats, ensuring that these vessels are seaworthy. This role requires a strong understanding of diesel engine mechanics, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in challenging conditions. Technicians often collaborate with marine engineers and vessel operators to deliver efficient and timely maintenance services. Keeping up-to-date records of performed services and adhering to environmental regulations also form part of a marine diesel engine technician's core duties.


Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough inspections of marine diesel engines to identify potential issues early.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all types of marine diesel engines to extend their lifespan.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical problems using specialized diagnostic equipment.
  • Repair and replace damaged or worn engine components with precision.
  • Operate and utilize various hand and power tools efficiently while maintaining safety protocols.
  • Interpret technical manuals and schematics to facilitate accurate repairs and adjustments.
  • Maintain comprehensive service records and reports to track engine performance history.
  • Liaise with ship engineers and crew to schedule engine maintenance during optimal times.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards during engine operations.
  • Update knowledge continuously about advancements in diesel engine technologies and practices.
  • Stay prepared to respond to emergency breakdown calls to minimize vessel downtime.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior technicians and apprentices.


Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with formal technical training preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of experience working with marine diesel engines.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of marine diesel engine systems and components.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in engine diagnostics.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex technical manuals and blueprints.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with engineering teams.
  • Willingness to work in diverse environments and respond to on-call emergencies.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
  • Certification from a recognized body, such as the American Boat & Yacht Council, is advantageous.
  • Strong commitment to understanding and adhering to safety regulations and protocols.
  • Physical capability to perform tasks that involve heavy lifting and prolonged periods on vessels.
  • Basic proficiency in computer applications for maintaining digital service records is preferred.
