Radar and Telemetry Lead
The Radar and Telemetry Lead is responsible for planning, designing, and managing all remote sensing solutions that support test activities at the Test Range and off-site operations. This includes oversight of tracking and surveillance radar instrumentation, electro-optical tracking systems, flight termination systems, and telemetry. The role ensures accurate test data capture, system integrity, and continuous improvement of remote sensing capabilities.
Key Accountabilities:
Test Planning & Design
Collaborate with test specialists and clients to establish optimum instrumentation for tests requiring radars, electro-optical trackers, and telemetry.
Define and validate setups for flight termination systems in air tests.
Develop detailed equipment location plans to ensure complete and accurate data capture.
Ensure remote sensing integration across all test phases (planning, execution, reporting).
Develop sensor coverage maps to optimize line-of-sight and minimize data loss.
Execution & Oversight
Produce detailed test procedures for technicians to follow during data capture.
Supervise instrumentation technicians during test execution to ensure required data is collected.
Lead test engineers and technicians in developing test reports, formatting captured data for inclusion.
Oversee real-time monitoring of radar, EO, and telemetry feeds during tests to ensure system performance and data integrity.
Coordinate remote sensing resources during simultaneous or multi-domain test campaigns.
Equipment & Remote Sensing Systems Management
Ensure all remote sensing equipment is calibrated, maintained, and operated per Range documentation.
Conduct system validation and end-to-end checks of radar, telemetry, and EO tracking prior to tests.
Manage data acquisition systems, ensuring compatibility with radars, EO trackers, and telemetry systems.
Establish data quality standards for signal reception, telemetry decoding, and radar/EO imagery.
Monitor technology trends to optimize equipment use and recommend new acquisitions as needed.
Develop redundancy and contingency plans for remote sensing system failures during tests.
Leadership & Development
Provide technical leadership and guidance to engineers and technicians during test activities.
Partner with the Engineering Manager to develop skillsets of remote sensing teams, particularly in radar, EO systems, telemetry, and FTS.
Develop and deliver training programs for technicians on radar operations, EO tracking, and telemetry data handling.
Contribute to documentation updates, SOPs, and technical manuals related to remote sensing systems.
Experience & Qualifications.
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Systems Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
8+ years of experience in radar systems, telemetry, and test instrumentation, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
Strong expertise in tracking radars, electro-optical systems, telemetry systems, and flight termination systems.
Proven ability to design test setups, procedures, and data capture strategies in complex test environments.
Excellent leadership, communication, and client-facing collaboration skills.
Knowledge of equipment calibration, maintenance, and system lifecycle management.
