Job Description

An Echo Technician, also known as a Cardiac Sonographer or Echocardiographer, is a crucial member of the healthcare team responsible for performing echocardiograms, a specialized medical imaging technique used to assess the heart's function and structure. This role involves using ultrasound equipment to produce images of the heart chambers, valves, and vessels, which assist physicians in diagnosing and managing cardiovascular conditions. Echo Technicians must possess a blend of technical expertise, attention to detail, and interpersonal skills to explain procedures to patients, operate sophisticated machinery, and collaborate with medical professionals effectively. This is a vital role for ensuring accurate diagnosis and helping guide treatment plans for patients with heart-related issues.


Responsibilities

  • Operate ultrasound equipment to conduct echocardiography exams on patients.
  • Prepare patients for echocardiogram procedures, answering any questions they have.
  • Analyze and interpret test results, providing initial assessments to physicians.
  • Maintain ultrasound equipment to ensure it operates effectively and safely.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and infection control procedures at all times.
  • Document patient information and test results accurately in medical records.
  • Collaborate with cardiologists to evaluate the findings of echocardiograms.
  • Update personal knowledge and skills through continuing education and training sessions.
  • Assist in the development of departmental policies and procedures to improve services.
  • Ensure patient comfort and confidentiality throughout the testing process.
  • Participate in quality assurance and improvement activities within the department.
  • Provide support and guidance to junior staff and new team members.

Requirements

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in sonography or a related medical field.
  • Certification as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience performing echocardiograms in a clinical setting.
  • Strong understanding of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathology is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with patients.
  • Proficient technical skills for operating ultrasound equipment and software.
  • Attention to detail to analyze images and ensure high-quality examinations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary medical team environment.
