Job Description

The Commis I is an integral part of the culinary team, responsible for assisting in the preparation and presentation of high-quality dishes. As a Commis I, the individual will work closely with the chefs to ensure food preparation vessels are clean, ingredients are ready, and kitchen equipment is operating efficiently. This role requires a keen attention to detail, a strong understanding of food safety practices, and the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced kitchen environment. A successful Commis I will display a strong work ethic, adapt to the kitchen's needs quickly, and contribute positively to the collaborative atmosphere in the kitchen, aiming to deliver excellent service and maintain the restaurant's standards.


Responsibilities

  • Assist chefs with food preparation and cooking in accordance with recipes.
  • Ensure all ingredients are properly stored, labeled, and organized in the kitchen.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards throughout the kitchen area.
  • Prepare fresh ingredients, measure ingredients, and portion food accurately.
  • Conduct quality control checks to ensure final dishes meet set standards.
  • Assist in the setup and breakdown of the kitchen at the start and end of shifts.
  • Support the team in completing any additional culinary tasks assigned by the chef.
  • Follow all regulations regarding hygiene, cleanliness, and occupational health.
  • Utilize kitchen machinery and appliances with care and precision.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding kitchen operations.
  • Participate actively in any training sessions and culinary workshops organized.
  • Assist in inventory management to ensure sufficient supplies are available.

Requirements

  • Previous experience as a Commis I or similar culinary role preferred.
  • Understanding of basic cooking techniques and kitchen health standards.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a dynamic kitchen environment.
  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with kitchen staff.
  • Physically able to stand for long periods and carry heavy trays or equipment.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; culinary training is an advantage.
