The US Tax Manager is responsible for leading and managing corporate tax compliance, planning, and advisory engagements for clients across multiple industries. This role requires deep technical expertise in US federal, state, and multi-state taxation, strong client service skills, and the ability to manage complex engagements while developing and mentoring team members. The Tax Manager plays a key role in delivering high-quality work, driving workflow efficiency, and contributing to business development and firm growth.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Tax Compliance and Technical Expertise
Review and prepare federal, state, and local corporate tax returns, including quarterly estimates, extensions, vouchers, and projections.
Advise clients across a full spectrum of tax services, including tax planning, research, compliance, allocations, and transaction-related activities.
Deliver technically accurate work with minimal revisions while maintaining a strong professional work ethic.
Conduct and review high-level tax research on complex and emerging tax issues.
Stay current with federal, state, and local tax regulations and apply changes to client engagements and planning opportunities.
Understand and apply apportionment rules, nexus determinations, and multi-state taxation principles.
Maintain proficiency in tax software and research tools and share best practices with the team.
Engagement and Workflow Management
Manage multiple tax engagements by confirming objectives, scope, timelines, and work plans with clients.
Drive workflow efficiency to minimize risk, avoid surprises, meet deadlines, and support strong engagement economics, including budgeting, billing, realization, and utilization.
Take ownership of the full project lifecycle and assume ultimate responsibility for all engagement deliverables.
Adhere to firm quality control (QC) processes and ensure timely engagement of QC resources.
Ensure consistent, clear, and professional documentation of workpapers and deliverables.
Client Service
Provide exceptional client service through responsiveness, clear communication, and timely execution of deliverables.
Proactively engage clients at the start of engagements to obtain required documentation and ensure smooth workflows.
Draft professional, high-quality client communications and respond to inquiries within 24 hours.
Provide regular status updates to clients and internal stakeholders.
People Leadership and Development
Manage and allocate resources effectively, aligning team skill sets with engagement needs.
Supervise, mentor, and coach staff and senior associates, providing technical guidance and on-the-job training.
Delegate work appropriately and oversee team pipelines to ensure timely completion of deliverables.
Provide constructive feedback and participate in performance evaluations.
Promote adherence to standardized procedures, best practices, and firm policies.
Business Development and Firm Contribution
Identify opportunities for new business, expanded services, and additional tax issues for existing clients.
Contribute to the development of internal tax knowledge, workflows, and software capabilities through training and knowledge sharing.
Develop a growing understanding of the firm’s service lines and overall service offerings.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
CPA, EA, JD, or MST preferred.
8–10+ years of corporate tax experience in public accounting or a corporate tax department.
Strong knowledge of US federal, state, and multi-state corporate taxation.
Proven experience managing tax engagements and supervising teams.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with major tax software and tax research tools.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain high-quality standards.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Should be willing to accept a long-term work-from-home arrangement.
Should be amenable to a permanent night shift schedule.
