The University of Waikato invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Geological Modelling and Seismic Hazard Assessment, commencing on or around October 1, 2025. This opportunity is part of an MBIE-funded Smart Ideas research project aimed at advancing earthquake ground motion prediction in Aotearoa New Zealand. The project will focus on the development of innovative methods for high-resolution 3D geological modeling of sedimentary basins and their integration with advanced physics-based earthquake simulations. The research is intended to enhance understanding of subsurface conditions critical for seismic hazard assessment and urban resilience.

Requirements

– Demonstrated research experience in sedimentary basin analysis, stratigraphy, or geological modeling.

– Proficiency with GIS and subsurface modeling tools (such as ArcGIS, Petrel).

– Academic background in siliciclastic sedimentology, stratigraphy, or structural geology.

– Strong written and verbal communication skills; TOEFL/IELTS scores are required if English is not the applicant’s first language.

Supervision And Collaboration

The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr. Andrew La Croix (University of Waikato) and will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of geologists and earthquake engineers from the University of Waikato, University of Canterbury, University of Auckland, and Changwon National University.
