The School Of Business Administration At The American University Of Sharjah Is Looking For a Head Of Department (HoD) For Economics And a Head Of Department For Finance Starting Fall 2026. The Responsibility And Accountability Of An HoD Are Described Below
The Head of Department (HoD) coordinates the academic and administrative functions of the department. As the elected representative of the faculty, the HoD is entrusted with advancing the department’s best interests by fostering collective faculty decision-making, ensuring transparency in governance, safeguarding curriculum quality, supporting faculty development, and effectively representing departmental perspectives within the college and the wider university.
The Head of Department represents and ensures the well-being of the department faculty, and promotes an environment that supports faculty members and students in their efforts to succeed. In carrying out these responsibilities, the Head of Department engages in collaborative leadership with the faculty according to the AUS shared governance model of academic administration.
Key Responsibilities
- Academic Leadership
- Coordinates departmental curricula, scheduling and service assignments with faculty input, while overseeing curricular development, assessment and accreditation to ensure program quality and compliance.
- Holds accountability for programs, processes, data collection and reporting at the departmental level.
- Serves as an advocate of the department within the college/school and align broader university and college/school interests with departmental initiatives and activities.
- Promotes departmental programs internally and externally
- Faculty and Staff Development
- Mentors, evaluates and supports the professional development of faculty and staff, including structured faculty evaluations, annual staff evaluations and participation in faculty hiring.
- Encourages and facilitates the instructional and scholarly development of faculty
- Develops teaching schedules and service assignments, with consideration given to interests solicited from the faculty
- Student Experience
- Enhances the academic experience and addresses student concerns fairly and effectively.
- Governance and Compliance
- Reports to and be accountable to the Dean for departmental operations; represents departmental perspectives within college/school governance; fosters an environment of shared purpose, transparency and academic excellence; and ensures compliance with university policies and procedures.
- Resource and Program Management
- Manages departmental resources and budgets responsibly and transparently, in consultation with faculty, and promotes departmental programs internally and externally.
- Leads program accreditation efforts in the department
- Contributes to the assessment of and implementation of curricular changes
