Job Description
The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian role provides specialized cataloging and metadata expertise for the management of print and online resources. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Technology and Technical Services, the areas of responsibility for this role include day-to-day coordination of assigned technical services staff and processes, database maintenance, cataloging, technical processing, as well as working with vendors such as OCLC. The position shares responsibility for acquisitions, serials, and document delivery. Other responsibilities include providing liaison services (collection development, instruction, and outreach) to assigned academic departments; participating in ongoing professional development activities.
Job Responsibilities
Cataloging both print and electronic resources using recognized standards including AACR2, LCSH, LC, MARC21, and relevant metadata standards.
Provision of reference assistance (face-to-face and virtual).
Manage deposit of outputs into the AUS institutional repository.
Coordinating the Archives Specialist and Archives functions.
Coordinating Copyright services, including rights management / course pack processes.
Departmental liaison responsibilities, including collection development and maintenance, instruction, and other professional activities.
To foster and maintain strong links and networks with regional and international partners and within the sector, showcasing and disseminating best practice.
Required Qualifications And Professional Experience
An ALA-accredited (or equivalent) Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS).
A minimum of two years of relevant experience in academic libraries.
Direct experience with cataloging, both print and electronic resources.
Significant practical experience of engaging proactively with faculty and researchers.
Experience supervising paraprofessionals in an academic library.
Skills & Competencies
Experience in international academic librarianship, preferably with an American curriculum institution.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to answer enquiries effectively and to express complex ideas clearly and succinctly, both to a research focused audience and to others.
Strong commitment to customer service;
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work within a diverse multicultural environment.
A committed approach to library and information provision with a proactive approach to your own continued professional development and that of others.
Technical Skills
Substantial experience with AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, MARC21 and library automated systems.
Knowledge and understanding of best practices, current issues and trends in technical services and library technology.
Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, indexing and abstracting databases, and related software.
Understanding of cataloging processes and procedures.
Experience with Library Services Platform and Discovery layers such as OCLC’s Worldshare platform.
