Job Description
The Vice President – Microservices & Transformation provides strategic leadership and engineering governance for the Retail Banking Group’s microservices ecosystem within Retail Technology. This role drives the bank’s digital transformation by modernizing microservices architectures, standardizing engineering practices, and fostering continuous platform improvement. It ensures that all microservices-based solutions are scalable, secure, and future-ready, aligned with evolving business priorities and digital objectives. By guiding modernization efforts, platform enhancements, and engineering excellence, the role strengthens system resilience, accelerates development agility, and enables faster, high-quality delivery across the Retail Technology landscape.
Microservice Strategy & Roadmap: In alignment with the Head of Retail Engineering, define and drive the microservices strategy and roadmap for Retail Digital, ensuring alignment with business objectives, modernization goals, and digital transformation initiatives.
Transformation Initiatives: Provide strategic and technical leadership on modernization initiatives, guiding the re-engineering of legacy applications, migration to cloud-native and microservices-based architectures, and adoption of modern integration approaches to enhance scalability, resilience, and business agility
Engineering Leadership: Provide architectural and engineering leadership for new and enhanced solutions across Retail Technology, particularly microservices-based platforms, ensuring quality, scalability, architectural coherence, and alignment with engineering and strategic transformation objectives.
Digital Platform Enhancements: Review and provide strategic guidance on platform enhancement initiatives across digital systems, ensuring alignment with the overall engineering and transformation roadmap.
Innovation & Future-readiness: Continuously evaluate and adopt new frameworks, tools, and cloud-native technologies to ensure Retail Technology platforms remain agile, future-ready, and aligned with evolving business and technology trends.
Collaborate Across Teams: Partner with Chapter Leads, Solution Architects, DevOps, and SRE teams to ensure standardization, consistency, and reusability of services and platforms across all Retail Technology domains and regions.
Engineering Standardization: Champion and drive engineering standardization and platform improvement initiatives under Retail Engineering, promoting uniformity, quality, and operational excellence across squads.
Incident Leadership: Provide technical guidance on high-impact production incidents across Retail applications built on microservices architecture, supporting teams in effective recovery and implementation of preventive practices.
Knowledge
Deep understanding of microservices architecture, cloud-native platforms, and modern integration methodologies.
Strong knowledge of Retail Banking applications, both legacy and digital, including their operational, technical, and regulatory requirements.
Familiarity with engineering governance, platform standardization, DevSecOps practices, and security frameworks (ISG standards).
Awareness of emerging technologies, tools, and frameworks relevant to modernization, scalability, and operational efficiency.
Skills
Strategic and technical leadership with the ability to guide multiple squads and cross-functional teams.
Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills in complex, multi-system environments.
Excellent stakeholder management and collaboration skills, able to influence business and technical leaders.
Effective communication skills, able to translate technical strategy into business impact and vice versa.
Capability to drive innovation, standardization, and continuous improvement across teams and platforms.
Competence in risk assessment, incident guidance, and operational resilience for high-availability systems.
Experience
15+ years in software application design and development, including 5+ years leading engineering teams within Retail Banking Technology, with hands-on exposure to microservices and cloud-native transformations.
Proven track record in modernizing legacy platforms, implementing scalable digital solutions, and driving technology transformation programs.
Experience in managing cross-functional teams, collaborating with architects, DevOps, SRE, and business stakeholders.
Prior exposure to regulatory-compliant banking technology environments is highly desirable.
