Job Description

An Underwriting Assistant plays a critical start-to-finish role in the insurance application process, providing support to underwriters. The position involves a blend of administrative tasks and critical information analysis to ensure that applications are processed accurately and promptly. Underwriting Assistants act as the cornerstone of communication between clients, underwriters, and brokers, helping to gather all the necessary documentation and keep records up to date. A successful Underwriting Assistant will have a keen eye for detail, superior organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Moreover, building a foundational understanding of insurance principles and underwriting practices is crucial to thrive in this role and facilitate smooth operations within the underwriting team.


Responsibilities

  • Review insurance applications to ensure all necessary information has been provided.
  • Maintain accurate and updated records for all underwriting files and client databases.
  • Communicate directly with clients and brokers to obtain missing information and documentation.
  • Assist underwriters in gathering and evaluating client data, such as financial reports.
  • Prepare underwriting reports and documentation for underwriters to review and approve.
  • Respond promptly to underwriting inquiries and routine correspondence from clients.
  • Collaborate with underwriters and other assistants to ensure timely issuance of policies.
  • Input data into underwriting software systems with precision and attention to detail.
  • Monitor and follow up on policy renewals, amendments, and cancellations.
  • Organize and schedule meetings and conference calls as required by underwriting team.
  • Update and maintain various underwriting spread sheets and tracking tools regularly.
  • Participate in continuous learning opportunities to enhance underwriting knowledge and skills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business administration, or related field preferred.
  • Previous experience in an administrative or insurance-related role is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential for success.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a fast-paced setting.
  • Basic understanding of insurance underwriting processes and terminologies is a plus.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and integrity of client information.
