Job Description

The Sous Chef is a pivotal role within a restaurant's kitchen, acting as the second-in-command after the Head Chef. This position requires a talented and experienced culinary professional who is passionate about cooking and brings creativity and fine-tuning to the menu. The Sous Chef will work closely with the Head Chef to manage the daily operations of the kitchen, assist in directing other chefs, cooks, and kitchen workers, and ensure all dishes meet the restaurant's quality standards. Moreover, this role involves ensuring that the kitchen executes the menu adequately and upholds differentiation in the culinary experience offered to customers. The successful candidate must have strong leadership skills, the ability to maintain high food quality standards under pressure, and a full understanding of the food industry's safety and hygiene procedures.


Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Chef in designing and updating restaurant menus regularly.
  • Supervise kitchen staff, ensuring smooth and efficient kitchen operations.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate kitchen staff performance regularly.
  • Oversee food preparation to maintain quality standards and consistency.
  • Ensure all kitchen activities comply with health and safety regulations.
  • Monitor inventory levels and collaborate on ordering food supplies.
  • Work closely with the Head Chef to create innovative and seasonal dishes.
  • Manage kitchen budgets, focusing on waste reduction and cost control.
  • Coordinate with restaurant managers to meet service and timing requirements.
  • Resolve any kitchen issues or conflicts that arise in a timely manner.
  • Conduct briefings and meetings with kitchen staff to discuss operational details.
  • Step in to lead the kitchen in the Head Chef's absence, ensuring continuity.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Sous Chef or a relevant role in a busy kitchen environment.
  • Strong knowledge of culinary techniques, preparation methods, and food safety standards.
  • Capability to perform well in a fast-paced and high-pressure setting.
  • Exceptional leadership and supervisory skills to manage diverse kitchen teams.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; culinary school degree is a plus.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective collaboration.
