Youre joining a learning model with documented results at Alpha School. LearnWithAI powers the platform and is scaling rapidly across the US and internationally. Your role is to establish design excellence, define standards, and build the function from the ground up. Youll focus on our learning platform and its supporting applications, serving diverse audiences within and beyond Alpha.

Consider a five-year-old who hasnt learned to read yet, learning to count through a system that must make discovery feel like play. A teenager working two grade levels behind is rebuilding self-belief after years of academic setbacks—a single unclear interaction could reverse that progress. A parent gains visibility into their childs actual learning process. That transparency reduces worry and enables them to provide meaningful support. An academic coach overseeing a multi-age classroom requires insight into progress without information overload. Your work demands understanding each group thoroughly enough to make meaningfully distinct design decisions for each.

You own the experience layer: conduct deep audience research, translate insights into design principles engineers can implement directly, and deliver code-ready outputs that ship immediately—not static mockups awaiting review cycles. You collaborate with product leaders who drive outcomes and engineers who deploy code. You challenge requests that compromise user experience. The responsibility is yours, end-to-end.

AI serves as your force multiplier for faster iteration and broader coverage, but your judgment—not the models initial output—determines what ships. Primary focus is our education platform, with periodic work in other areas.

What You Will Be Doing

• Conduct user research across fundamentally different audience segments and develop design principles that reflect that understanding
• Establish and maintain design systems directly within each products UI framework, enabling faster engineering delivery and preventing design fragmentation
• Develop functional prototypes that allow product leaders to validate decisions in days rather than weeks
• Evaluate existing products from the users viewpoint: identify experience breakdowns, engagement blockers, and high-impact improvement opportunities
• Establish design culture: feedback mechanisms, trade-off evaluation frameworks, non-negotiable standards
• Collaborate with product leaders and engineers, challenging requests that degrade user experience

• Defining product strategy; product leaders own that responsibility, you ensure the experience delivers on it
• Creating static mockups requiring translation to code
• Focusing on a single product; your scope spans the entire portfolio
• Working from detailed design briefs; you synthesize context from fragmented inputs and begin designing with partial information

Basic Requirements

Senior Product Designer key responsibilities

• Minimum 5 years in product design or UX roles, with complete ownership from research through production launch
• Clear evidence of user empathy and research rigor with audiences significantly different from yourself
• Demonstrated craft in interaction and visual design, with portfolio work showing audience-tailored decisions over generic patterns, supported by articulated design opinions
• Proven AI-native working style: rapid iteration, critical evaluation, and willingness to challenge initial AI-generated output instead of defaulting to it
• Capability to convert designs into code using AI tools and contemporary frameworks

Working with us

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), long-term position. The position is immediately available and requires entering into an independent contractor agreement with Crossover as a Contractor of Record. The compensation level for this role is $100 USD/hour, which equates to $200,000 USD/year assuming 40 hours per week and 50 weeks per year. The payment period is weekly.
