Job Description

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) plays a crucial role in the care and support of newborn infants who are critically ill or born prematurely. As a key member of the healthcare team, the RN in the NICU provides specialized nursing care, monitors patient progress, administers medications, and communicates with parents and family members to provide updates and education on their child's condition. Working in a high-pressure environment, the NICU RN must be able to react quickly to medical emergencies and adapt to the needs of an ever-changing patient population. This role requires not only a deep understanding of neonatal care but also empathy and compassion to support families during a stressful time.


Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care to critically ill or premature newborns in the NICU.
  • Monitor vital signs and clinical conditions of newborns, adjusting care plans as needed.
  • Administer medications and intravenous therapy as prescribed by neonatal specialists.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and interpret results to assess patient health and progress.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to create and implement individualized care plans.
  • Educate and support parents, providing guidance on newborn care and recovery processes.
  • Respond swiftly to emergency situations, utilizing protocols to stabilize newborn patients.
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records, documenting patient care and treatment.
  • Operate and maintain life-support equipment such as ventilators and incubators.
  • Ensure strict adherence to infection control practices and hospital safety guidelines.
  • Participate in continuous professional development and training sessions in neonatal care.
  • Facilitate the transition from the NICU to home, providing family discharge instructions.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice is required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is essential.
  • Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to make quick decisions in urgent situations.
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with families and the healthcare team.
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-stress, fast-paced environment.
