Job Description

The role of a Quantity Surveyor in civil engineering is pivotal to ensure cost efficiency and sound financial management in construction projects. A Quantity Surveyor, often referred to as a Construction Economist or Cost Consultant, is responsible for managing all costs related to building and civil engineering projects, from the initial calculations to the final figures. Your primary aim is to minimize the costs of projects while achieving the required standards and quality. This may include ensuring successful project completion in terms of value for money, adhering to budgetary constraints, and not compromising on quality. As a Quantity Surveyor in the civil domain, you will interact with architects, clients, subcontractors, and other construction professionals to provide informed cost assessments and management strategies to optimize resource expenditure.


Responsibilities

  • Prepare tender and contract documents, including bills of quantities.
  • Facilitate cost management and cost reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Perform risk, value management, and cost control exercises effectively.
  • Advise on procurement strategy and project duration cost analysis.
  • Allocate work to subcontractors and ensure competitive tendering.
  • Measure and value the work done on-site by contractors and subcontractors.
  • Analyze outcomes and produce detailed progress reports efficiently.
  • Manage and address any financial or contractual disputes promptly.
  • Work closely with site managers, clients, and contractors to achieve budgets.
  • Assess foreseeable risks and implement mechanisms to mitigate costs.
  • Review and maintain project cost databases for continuous improvement.
  • Stay updated on construction techniques and industry best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, or related field.
  • Professional certification such as MRICS or equivalent is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in civil engineering construction.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects with strict deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail for cost calculations.
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills for effective collaboration.
  • Understanding of building regulations, codes, and standards in civils.
