Portfolio Directors lead and oversee portfolios of change initiatives, managing programmes of varying sizes and complexity from start to finish. They are accountable for delivering large-scale business transformation by applying the Change Framework, setting strong program discipline, and role-modelling effective leadership and communication.
The role carries end-to-end ownership across the portfolio—partnering with business and product owners to shape the vision and plan, mobilizing delivery, balancing demand with funding and resource capacity, governing execution through implementation, and ensuring change adoption and benefits realization. They work closely with the Regional Head of Transformation to keep the portfolio aligned to the wider MENAT agenda and HSBC Group strategy, values, and behaviors, and may also lead teams and line-manage junior colleagues.
Duties & Responsibilities
Leads the creation of robust, integrated programme plans by coordinating planning across multiple Project Managers and delivery partner teams; plans around constraints and optimizes delivery to maximize benefits and reduce risk.
Partners with Project Managers to secure buy-in, influencing senior stakeholders on program plans, delivery commitments, and material changes.
Defines and tracks meaningful performance metrics, using them to drive improvement actions that support on-time delivery and budget adherence.
Owns and maintains the portfolio roadmap, managing change effectively and keeping stakeholders aligned to agreed outcomes and benefits.
Intervenes early to address scope creep, budget overruns, schedule slippage, and any threats to benefits realization across the portfolio.
Secures sponsor and stakeholder approval for key deliverables, ensures formal program closure, measures stakeholder satisfaction, and captures lessons learned and feedback.
Proactively identifies current and emerging risks and issues.
Maintains oversight of thematic risks, issues, and dependencies, assessing impact on benefits and taking action to minimize impact by removing blockers and challenging constraints.
Produces timely portfolio reporting on status, risks, issues, and performance, using management information to evaluate delivery health.
Manages the portfolio budget, monitors variances, and drives strong financial governance and cost control.
Reviews and constructive challenges project/workstream status updates to ensure performance is actively managed and issues are addressed.
Works closely with delivery partners on planning, solution design, and estimation; brings teams together and manages dependencies across partner teams and other programs.
Engages Global Transformation teams to source programme support and capability as required.
Ensures programme and project teams consistently apply the bank’s Change Framework.
Acts as a visible change leader alongside business leadership and sponsors, accountable for delivering portfolio outcomes and benefits.
Builds momentum and accountability across the team, setting the pace and leading by example.
Management and control of a portfolio with ambitious goals, high change requirements and a dynamic regulatory environment.
Dealing with complex requirements and unique projects while also trying to sequence work and capitalize on committed spend.
Management of multiple senior stakeholders and sponsors.
Achieving benefits (cost reduction, revenue increase, strategic goals) set out in the business case, while remaining dependent on Group deliveries or other elements outside of direct control.
Managing complex international teams and working with multiple delivery teams.
Experience & Qualifications
Graduation degree is REQUIRED– to secure a UAE Visa and Work Permit
Strong knowledge of transformation delivery approaches, including Waterfall and Agile methodologies, and associated best-practice techniques.
Deep understanding of HSBC Group structures, processes, and strategic objectives.
Solid banking knowledge and a clear view of how change translates into benefits for HSBC, customers, and wider stakeholders.
Strong awareness of the external landscape, including regulatory, political, and competitive factors.
Good understanding of HSBC delivery organizations, with a global mindset and experience working with delivery partners.
Demonstrated ability to operate across multiple markets while maintaining a global perspective.
Commercially minded with strong financial acumen.
Proven track record of engaging and influencing senior stakeholders and business sponsors.
Evidence of sound judgement and the ability to make strategic decisions.
Experience delivering large-scale, complex programs at pace, building and evolving high-performing teams to support delivery through each phase.
Strong people leadership and team management capability.
Proven experience in implementation, change management, and benefits realization.
PRINCE2 or PMP certification (desirable).
Agile certifications (desirable).
