Job Description

A Perfusionist 16N25 plays a critical role in the operating room, particularly during open-heart surgeries, by managing the cardiopulmonary bypass machine. This vital piece of equipment temporarily takes over the function of a patient's heart and lungs, allowing surgeons to perform intricate procedures. Perfusionists are highly trained professionals proficient in monitoring and controlling the patient's physiological state and maintaining optimal conditions throughout the surgical process. As a Perfusionist, you'll be an integral part of a dynamic surgical team, ensuring patient safety and contributing to successful medical outcomes. This position demands a comprehensive understanding of human physiology, mechanical systems, and a high degree of precision under pressure.


Responsibilities

  • Operate and manage the cardiopulmonary bypass machine during cardiovascular surgeries.
  • Monitor the patient’s hemodynamic status and adjust parameters as necessary.
  • Collaborate with surgeons and anesthesiologists to ensure optimal perfusion practices.
  • Prepare and maintain perfusion equipment in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Analyze blood samples to determine safe levels of gases and electrolytes for patients.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of perfusion activities during procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of specialized medications during surgery.
  • Participate in maintaining inventory and ordering perfusion supplies when required.
  • Educate and train new staff or students in perfusion technology and protocols.
  • Stay updated with advancements in perfusion technology and techniques to enhance service delivery.
  • Participate in emergency interventions such as ECMO or open chest procedures as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and safety standards during operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Perfusion Technology or related health sciences field required.
  • Successful completion of an accredited perfusionist training program essential.
  • Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of human cardiovascular and respiratory physiological principles crucial.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work under high-pressure conditions.
  • Demonstrated experience in operating and troubleshooting perfusion equipment.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with surgical teams and patients.
