Job Description

A Perfusionist is a highly specialized medical professional responsible for operating the heart-lung machine during cardiac surgeries. They play an essential role in managing patients' physiological and metabolic demands through regulating oxygenating equipment and blood gases. Their work ensures that patients' organs and tissues receive the necessary blood flow and oxygenation, especially when the heart is stopped during surgery. Perfusionists must have keen attention to detail and make quick decisions in high-pressure and rapidly changing environments. The job offers a unique blend of technical, physiological, and critical-thinking skills, playing a critical part in the surgical team to ensure the patient's circulatory and respiratory systems function effectively throughout the procedure.


Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate the heart-lung machine and related medical equipment for surgeries.
  • Monitor patients’ vital signs and blood gases during the surgery to ensure safety.
  • Adjust and modify perfusion parameters according to any changes in the patient's condition.
  • Work closely with the surgical team to plan and execute the perfusion strategy.
  • Maintain a sterile environment to prevent infections during surgical operations.
  • Prepare and manage perfusion-related medications and supplies for each procedure.
  • Conduct post-operative perfusion procedures as required for patient stabilization.
  • Document and report all perfusion-related activities and findings during surgery.
  • Provide healthcare team with technical support and expertise in perfusion services.
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments and technologies in perfusion science.
  • Train and supervise junior staff and students in perfusion techniques and practices.
  • Ensure all perfusion equipment is regularly maintained and calibrated for accurate performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in perfusion technology or related field from an accredited program.
  • Certification as a Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) is required for practice.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience operating heart-lung machines in a clinical setting.
  • Proven understanding of cardiovascular and respiratory physiology concepts.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to handle high-pressure situations.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with surgical teams.
  • Up-to-date knowledge on latest perfusion equipment and surgical techniques.
