Job Description

An Optical Technician is a vital part of the eye care team, playing a crucial role in the preparation, maintenance, and adjustment of optical devices to facilitate optimal vision correction for patients. They work closely with optometrists and ophthalmologists to ensure the highest standard of accuracy and quality in the construction and repair of eyewear. This role encompasses a blend of technical skill, customer interaction, and product knowledge, requiring precision and attention to detail in crafting and maintaining optical lenses and frames. An Optical Technician must possess a thorough understanding of optical theories, as well as being adept at using specialized machinery and technologies. They contribute to a positive patient experience through their expertise, cleanliness, and ability to deliver tailored solutions that meet individual patient needs.


Responsibilities

  • Interpret and implement optical prescriptions from optometrists and ophthalmologists accurately.
  • Cut and fit lenses into frames using specialized equipment and machinery.
  • Conduct maintenance, repair, and adjustment of eyewear to ensure a comfortable fit for patients.
  • Advise customers on suitable frames, lenses, and coatings tailored to their specific needs.
  • Verify alignment and testing of completed eyewear to meet quality standards before delivery.
  • Utilize precision instruments to measure and cut lenses, ensuring exact prescription fulfillment.
  • Maintain updated knowledge on optical products, techniques, and lens technologies.
  • Comply with safety standards and regulations to ensure a secure working environment.
  • Interface with customers to manage expectations and address any concerns promptly.
  • Conduct routine inventory checks and manage supplies required for lens production.
  • Participate in training sessions to remain informed on new optical technologies and practices.
  • Document and maintain records of prescriptions, repairs, and adjustments for future reference.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; further certification or training preferred.
  • At least two years of experience as an Optical Technician or similar role.
  • Proficiency in using optical tools and machinery for lens cutting and fitting.
  • Strong understanding of optical prescription terminology and requirements.
  • Excellent attention to detail and manual dexterity skills required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Familiarity with computer systems and inventory management software.
