Job Description

An Operating Theatre Nurse, also known as a perioperative nurse, plays a critical role in the surgical team, ensuring that surgeries are carried out smoothly in a sterile and organized environment. This professional is responsible for providing a bridge between surgical procedures and patient care through their expertise, and they ensure optimal patient outcomes by assisting in surgery, preparing operating rooms, and monitoring the patient's condition during surgery. They must have an in-depth knowledge of surgical procedures and be adept at working in fast-paced and high-pressure situations. This role requires excellent communication and teamwork skills, as the Operating Theatre Nurse frequently interacts with surgeons, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care and deliver the highest standard of treatment.


Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain the sterile field in the operating room before and during surgery.
  • Assess patients prior to surgery to ensure their preparedness for the procedure.
  • Assist the surgical team with gowning and gloving in preparation for standard and emergency procedures.
  • Monitor the patient’s vital signs and condition throughout the surgery and recovery phases.
  • Administer medications and assist with anesthesia to patients under the direction of a surgeon or anesthetist.
  • Ensure appropriate surgical instruments and materials are available and properly accounted for during procedures.
  • Document all pertinent patient information and surgical data accurately for medical records.
  • Coordinate with surgical team members to ensure procedures proceed smoothly and efficiently.
  • Educate patients and their families on postoperative care and preventive measures to aid recovery.
  • Address any complications under the guidance of senior medical staff promptly and effectively.
  • Participate in the development of new procedures and the maintenance of hospital standards.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry best practices and integrate them into daily practice.

Requirements

  • A registered nursing license and a bachelor’s degree in nursing are mandatory.
  • At least two years of experience working in an operating room or a similar environment.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required for patient safety.
  • Strong understanding and adherence to hospital policies, procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail are essential for this role.
  • Ability to remain calm under high-stress situations and make quick, effective decisions.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills for team integration and patient interaction.
