Job Description

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Registered Nurse plays a critical role in providing specialized nursing care to newborn infants who are critically ill, premature, or require close medical attention. As a vital member of the NICU team, the registered nurse is responsible for monitoring infants' health conditions, administering medications, and supporting families during a challenging and emotional time. This role demands advanced nursing skills, a compassionate attitude, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. The NICU nurse collaborates with neonatologists, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the highest standard of care for neonates. With a focus on patient-centered and family-centered care, the NICU RN implements evidence-based practices while maintaining a nurturing environment for newborns and their families.


Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive care to newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
  • Monitor and record vital signs such as heart rate, respiration, and temperature.
  • Administer medications and treatments according to established protocols and orders.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to develop and implement individualized care plans.
  • Educate and support families in understanding their infant's condition and care plan.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and procedures, interpreting results to inform care decisions.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care and progress notes.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies, providing life-saving interventions as needed.
  • Ensure infection control measures are adhered to, safeguarding vulnerable infants.
  • Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current with neonatal nursing best practices.
  • Advocate for the needs and rights of the infants and their families in the NICU.
  • Facilitate a supportive team environment, contributing to a positive workplace culture.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Strong clinical skills with the ability to interpret and act on vital signs and monitoring.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to educate and support families.
  • Commitment to providing compassionate, family-centered care and patient advocacy.
