Job Description

A Medical Laboratory Technician is a crucial component in the healthcare team responsible for conducting laboratory tests essential for the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. These professionals perform complex chemical, biological, hematological, and bacteriological tests accurately and efficiently. With their knowledge and expertise, they help doctors diagnose conditions and make decisions about patient care. Medical Laboratory Technicians work under the supervision of laboratory managers and medical technologists, often in hospitals, clinics, or private laboratories. They must maintain a sterile and organized laboratory environment and adhere to strict safety protocols to prevent contamination. Their work significantly impacts patient outcomes, making attention to detail and precision paramount to their role.


Responsibilities

  • Collect blood, urine, and tissue samples for laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Perform chemical, hematological, immunologic, and bacteriological testing on patient samples.
  • Ensure all laboratory tests are performed following standard operating procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment by performing routine maintenance and calibrations regularly.
  • Document test results accurately and enter data into laboratory information systems.
  • Communicate findings and results to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals promptly.
  • Analyze laboratory findings to check the accuracy and validate test results before reporting.
  • Ensure the laboratory is stocked with necessary supplies, reagents, and chemicals.
  • Adhere to infection-control protocols to prevent contamination and ensure safety in the lab.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control programs to maintain service standards.
  • Assist in the development of improved techniques, methods, and practices for laboratory efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot and solve problems regarding test errors, equipment malfunctions, and quality control issues.

Requirements

  • An associate degree in medical laboratory technology or a related field is required.
  • Proven experience in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
  • Strong proficiency with laboratory equipment, procedures, and safety protocols is essential.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in performing laboratory tests and recording results.
  • Good communication skills to effectively liaise with healthcare professionals and team members.
  • Certification by a recognized board, such as ASCP, is often required by employers.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks efficiently within deadlines.
