Job Description

A Medical Laboratory Technician plays a crucial role in the healthcare system by performing a variety of laboratory tests and procedures that are essential for diagnosing diseases, managing patient treatment, and ensuring the accuracy of medical investigations. They work under the supervision of laboratory managers and pathologists and are responsible for operating sophisticated laboratory equipment, collecting samples, and analyzing biological specimens to help healthcare providers make informed decisions. Their meticulous attention to detail and adherence to standardized procedures contribute significantly to patient care and public health. By maintaining accurate records and ensuring quality control, Medical Laboratory Technicians support the effectiveness of medical treatments and uphold existing health protocols.


Responsibilities

  • Collect and process blood, tissue, and other laboratory specimens from patients.
  • Conduct standardized tests on fluids and biological materials to aid diagnosis.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to established protocols.
  • Record and analyze test results, ensuring accuracy and validity of data.
  • Prepare reports and communicate results promptly to healthcare providers.
  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment, adhering to health regulations.
  • Calibrate and troubleshoot laboratory instruments periodically to ensure functionality.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Ensure specimens are stored properly to maintain integrity and reliability.
  • Perform quality control procedures to assess technical accuracy of laboratory operations.
  • Assist with research and validation studies to innovate laboratory methods.
  • Provide training and guidance to junior laboratory staff as necessary.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in medical laboratory technology or a related field required.
  • Certification from a recognized accreditation agency preferred, such as ASCP or AMT.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory equipment operation and maintenance protocols.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to conduct precise laboratory analyses.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems and data management software.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively report results and collaborate with teams.
