Medical Coder Job Description

As a Medical Coder, you will play a crucial role in the healthcare revenue cycle. You will be responsible for converting healthcare diagnoses, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. The role requires a keen understanding of medical terminology, as well as the intricacies of the coding systems such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT). Attention to detail is paramount, as your work directly impacts the financial operations of healthcare facilities, insurance companies, and patient billing. A successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency in the usage of coding software and stay updated on any changes or updates in coding guidelines. Your work will ensure that healthcare providers receive accurate reimbursement for services rendered and that patient records are meticulous and precise.


Responsibilities

  • Review patient medical records for accurate coding of each treatment.
  • Assign appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes through recognized coding systems.
  • Work closely with healthcare practitioners to clarify information ensuring accurate coding.
  • Monitor coding and documentation practices to adhere to compliance regulations.
  • Train new staff regarding coding guidelines and updates in healthcare regulations.
  • Regularly audit coding processes and make necessary improvements or corrections.
  • Collaborate with billing department to resolve any coding discrepancies found.
  • Stay informed of changes in insurance billing, coding, and procedures updates.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and handle data following HIPAA guidelines.
  • Ensure correct coding for the purpose of compliance and reimbursement purposes.
  • Act as a liaison between the healthcare provider and other departments for coding matters.
  • Utilize coding software effectively for efficient and accurate record-keeping function.


Requirements

  • Certification from a recognized body like AAPC or AHIMA is required.
  • Minimum of two years of medical coding experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Strong understanding of CPT, ICD, and HCPCS coding terminologies.
  • Excellent attention to detail to ensure coding accuracy in records.
  • Proficient with medical coding software and technology systems.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Strong communication skills for effective interaction with healthcare staff.
