Job Description

A Medical Coder is an essential part of the healthcare team, responsible for transforming healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. The coder's primary function is to ensure that the correct codes are applied during the medical billing process, which includes removing the information from documentation, assigning accurate codes, and creating a claim to be paid by insurance carriers. As a Medical Coder, you will be working closely with healthcare providers to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of coding and to optimize the reimbursement process for the healthcare facility. Precision and attention to detail are critical for success in this role, helping to ensure efficiency and compliance with healthcare regulations.


Responsibilities

  • Analyze patient medical records to assign the correct procedure and diagnosis codes.
  • Ensure proper documentation is present to support coding decisions made daily.
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare providers for clarification of records if needed.
  • Maintain a high degree of accuracy to meet compliance and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with billing departments to resolve coding discrepancies or denials.
  • Keep current with coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements.
  • Conduct audits and reviews of coded data to ensure for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare regular reports on coding operations and discrepancies for management review.
  • Facilitate timely processing of claims to maximize reimbursement for services provided.
  • Assist in maintaining coding policies, procedures, and training documentation.
  • Stay informed about new coding updates, regulations, and healthcare industry changes.
  • Partake in continuing education to maintain professional certification and knowledge.

Requirements

  • Completion of a medical coding certification program such as CPC, CCS, or CCA.
  • Minimum of one year experience in a medical coding role preferred.
  • Proficient in coding with ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and pathophysiology is required.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to maintain accuracy under deadlines.
  • Ability to use computer systems and coding software efficiently and accurately.
  • Strong communication skills to work collaboratively with healthcare professionals.
