Job Description

As a Medical Coder, you will play a critical role in the healthcare industry by ensuring the accurate conversion of patient information into standardized codes. These codes are essential for billing and tracking patient records within the healthcare management systems, insurance claims, and other essential healthcare operations. You will be responsible for analyzing patient records and transforming diagnoses, procedures, and services into universal alphanumeric codes. This position requires a keen understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and the ability to accurately interpret various healthcare documents. Your work will directly impact the financial health of healthcare organizations and ensure that patients are billed correctly for the care they've received.


Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze patient medical records and reports for coding accuracy.
  • Assign appropriate codes for diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM and CPT systems.
  • Ensure compliance with national and local coding guidelines and standards.
  • Conduct regular coding audits to ensure accuracy and quality control.
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare providers for clarifications on ambiguities in documentation.
  • Maintain confidentiality and information security standards as per healthcare regulations.
  • Update and share coding knowledge and industry trends with team members.
  • Use coding software and tools efficiently to streamline the coding process.
  • Prepare and submit coded information to insurance companies for billing purposes.
  • Assist in training new medical coders and other staff on proper coding practices.
  • Collaborate with billing staff to resolve any coding discrepancies or issues.
  • Adapt to updates in coding systems and modify practices as necessary.

Requirements

  • Certification in medical coding (such as CPC, CCS, or equivalent certification).
  • Proficient knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Experience with electronic health records and coding software tools.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to maintain accuracy under pressure.
  • Previous medical coding experience in a healthcare or clinical environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration.
