Job Description

As an IP Coding Team Leader, you will play a crucial role in overseeing and managing a team of IP coding specialists. Your leadership will be central in ensuring the accuracy and quality of coding processes, which are essential for the financial health and compliance of healthcare institutions. You will be tasked with enhancing operational efficiency, supporting ongoing team development, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. This position requires a policy-driven individual who is adept at problem-solving, with an in-depth understanding of coding guidelines and regulations. Your role will also involve collaborating with various departments to ensure the seamless implementation of medical coding practices, compliance with federal guidelines, and the optimization of reimbursable revenue.


Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of IP coding specialists to ensure productive workflow.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of each team member against set goals.
  • Ensure adherence to all coding guidelines, protocols, and policy standards.
  • Perform quality assurance audits to maintain coding accuracy and compliance.
  • Provide regular training sessions and development opportunities for team members.
  • Coordinate with department heads to optimize coding processes and operations.
  • Stay updated on current coding trends and governmental regulations affecting coding procedures.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor coding policies and procedures to enhance efficiency.
  • Resolve complex coding issues and disputes requiring a high level of expertise.
  • Ensure codes are accurately assigned and appropriately documented for insurance reimbursements.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on productivity and quality metrics for management review.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment with open communication and continuous feedback.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, or a related field, is preferred.
  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or equivalent is required.
  • At least five years of professional experience in IP coding or a similar role is essential.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience in managing coding teams successfully.
  • Proficiency in coding software applications and electronic health record systems is necessary.
  • In-depth knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines and conventions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively liaise with various stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities are essential for this role.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA regulations is required.
