Job Description

The role of an IP Coding Team Leader is designed for a highly organized, detail-oriented individual with a strong background in medical coding and IP (Inpatient) coding specifically. This position will involve leading a team of IP coders and ensuring accurate and efficient coding of inpatient records in accordance with all applicable guidelines and standards, such as ICD-10-CM and DRG methodologies. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in a healthcare setting and possess the leadership skills necessary to drive team performance and productivity. Excellent communication skills are essential, as the Team Leader must liaise between the coding team, other departments within the organization, and external regulatory bodies. This role requires not only technical proficiency in coding practices but also strategic capabilities to optimize workflow and improve the quality of coding operations.


Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of IP coders to ensure high-quality coding accuracy and compliance.
  • Review and analyze inpatient medical records to verify appropriate coding techniques and procedures.
  • Oversee daily coding operations and allocate resources effectively to meet organizational deadlines.
  • Implement coding guidelines and best practices to enhance team efficiency and accuracy.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to discuss coding challenges and implement solutions collaboratively.
  • Monitor team performance metrics and provide feedback to improve staff productivity and morale.
  • Coordinate with clinical and administrative personnel to resolve any discrepancies in coding practices.
  • Ensure coding operations are in compliance with all relevant health information standards and policies.
  • Develop training programs and materials for continuous coder education and skills enhancement.
  • Facilitate communication between the coding team and other healthcare departments for collaborative processes.
  • Prepare regular reports for senior management on coding accuracy, efficiency, and team performance.
  • Adapt to changes in coding standards and regulations to ensure the team remains compliant and updated.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or a related field required.
  • Certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or equivalent is mandatory.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in IP coding within a healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with a focus on team management skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM and DRG coding methodologies.
  • Exceptional analytical skills to interpret clinical documentation accurately.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential.
  • Proficiency in using coding software and familiar with electronic health record systems.
