As we continue to grow, we are currently seeking an Associate Data and Business Analyst to join our dynamic and growing organisation.


The Intermediate Underwriter at Pineapple Tech PTY LTD is responsible for the accurate assessment, evaluation, and processing of short-term insurance risks across the policy lifecycle, ensuring that all underwriting decisions are aligned with company mandates, regulatory requirements, and risk appetite.


Serving as a critical control point within Pineapple’s insurance value chain, safeguarding portfolio quality, preventing adverse risk selection, and enabling sustainable growth. By effectively managing system referrals, applying underwriting rules, and resolving complex exceptions, the Intermediate Underwriter ensures that policies are issued with integrity, precision, and consistency, furthermore supporting operational efficiency, customer experience, and loss ratio protection, directly contributing to Pineapple’s ability to scale responsibly, maintain profitability, and deliver a high-quality insurance product.


Key Responsibilities:

General duties and responsibilities of an Intermediate Underwriter (Short Term Insurance) at Pineapple include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluate and assess new business, renewals, and endorsements in line with underwriting mandates
  • Ensure accurate application of pricing, risk rules, and policy structures
  • Maintain high levels of data accuracy and processing efficiency
  • Investigate and resolve system-generated referrals, hard stops, and warnings
  • Analyse external data mismatches and make sound manual underwriting decisions
  • Ensure all overrides are justified, documented, and compliant
  • Ensure adherence to FAIS, POPIA, and TCF principles in all underwriting decisions
  • Validate supporting documentation (e.g., valuation reports)
  • Identify and escalate compliance risks or inconsistencies
  • Communicate underwriting decisions clearly to Sales, Retentions, and Claims
  • Guide underwriting rules, declines, and premium adjustments
  • Maintain SLA adherence and support operational efficiency


Qualifications

Qualifications and Experience Required:

  • A Degree, Diploma, or Higher Certificate in Risk Management, Insurance, or Finance.
  • RE5 Certification: Regulatory Examination for Representatives
  • Class of Business Certification
  • FAIS Qualification: NQF Level 4 in Short-Term Insurance.
  • Continuous Professional Development (CPD): Must be up to date with CPD hours as required by the FSCA.
  • 2+ years in an underwriting role
  • 3 to 5 years of general experience in the Short-Term Insurance industry (such as policy administration, claims, or sales)


Skills and Competencies Required:

  • Adaptability & Continuous Learning: Openness to change and the ability to quickly learn new automated system workflows, updated underwriting rules, and shifting compliance regulations
  • Team Collaboration: A willingness to work closely and positively with cross-functional departments (such as Sales, Retentions, Claims, and Quality Assurance) to achieve overall business goals
  • Resilience & Conflict Management: Capable of handling pushback when enforcing strict underwriting mandates, maintaining a firm but professional stance under pressure
  • Excellent Communication Skills: Must be able to clearly explain underwriting decisions, mandate rules, or system hard-stops to all departments
  • Risk Assessment & Mandate Application: Ability to evaluate short-term insurance risks and accurately apply specific underwriting mandates, guidelines, and pricing models.
  • System Proficiency: Confident navigation of automated, rules-based insurance policy administration systems and workflow engines.
  • Data Interpretation & Validation: Strong capability to read and interpret data. Internal and external data integration reports
  • Regulatory & Compliance Knowledge: Solid technical understanding of South African insurance regulations, specifically TCF (Treating Customers Fairly), FAIS, and POPIA, and how they apply to the underwriting process.
  • Policy & Product Knowledge: Strong understanding of short-term insurance policy wordings, coverage structures, exclusions, and risk limits.
  • Exception Handling: Ability to technically assess system-generated referrals, hard stops, and warnings to make mandate-aligned manual decisions.
  • Computer Literacy: High proficiency in navigating automated systems, standard MS Office software (specifically Microsoft Excel), Google Workspace (Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Drive), and general digital data capture.
